Reinstate the Flag of Taiwan

We, the undersigned students, faculty members, and concerned individuals of Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera, respectfully submit this petition to request the reinstatement of the flag of Taiwan at Edificio Principal Ciencias Sociales y Jurídicas. The removal of the flag has caused concern among members of our university community who value the principles of inclusivity, academic freedom, and respect for diverse cultures and identities.

Taiwan has a rich history and a thriving democratic society, and its contributions to global academia, economy, and culture are widely recognized. The presence of the Taiwanese flag previously served as a symbol of international representation and respect for global perspectives within our institution. Its removal has raised concerns about the message this action sends regarding our university’s commitment to diversity and academic neutrality. Additionally, there are many Taiwanese students at our university, and we believe that their identity and representation should be acknowledged and respected. Moreover, due to our commitment to academic freedom, we are not obligated to commit to the One China policy, as universities should remain spaces of open discourse and unbiased intellectual exchange.

We believe that restoring the flag of Taiwan aligns with our university’s values of fostering global awareness, respect for different cultures, and promoting open dialogue. Furthermore, universities serve as places of knowledge exchange and critical thinking, where political sensitivities should not overshadow the recognition of diverse international communities.

We kindly request that the university administration reconsider the decision to remove the flag and take necessary steps to restore it. By doing so, we can reaffirm our university’s commitment to inclusivity, respect for all members of the international community, and the free exchange of ideas.
